Maverick Banes (QLD) has won his first title in two years, defeating American Jarmere Jenkins to take the Tennis Wollongong International title on Sunday.
“I’m pretty stoked to get my first title in Australia and also my first win over Jarmere, who has got the better of me the last 4 times we played,” Banes said.
Fourth seed Jenkins, took the opening set in a tiebreaker, in 55 minutes. He continued to power through breaking Banes at 4-3, to serve for the match at 5-3. However, Banes didn’t back away from the match as he managed to secure the break back, to take out the second set 7-5. From that point on the 24-year-old Queenslander broke serve twice in the third set to take out the match 6-7(6) 7-5 6-2.
Australian tennis legend Ken Rosewall presented both players with the trophies.
