O'Shannessy into singles and doubles main draw at the Tennis Wollongong International

Illawarra junior Adam O’Shannessy (NSW) lost to good friend and doubles partner, Michael Shepheard 6-2 6-0. The two have known each other since they were 12 years old and have had some close matches in the past, however Shepheard held his nerve to secure his spot in the singles main draw.

“I’ve only played in one Pro Tour and I never won a match. Winning today gives me a lot of confidence going into first round of main draw,” said Shepheard.

Despite the loss, O’Shannessy has been awarded a Lucky Loser spot into the main draw singles event at only 16 years of age. The day got even better for O’Shannessy and Shepheard as the duo received a wildcard into the doubles main draw event.

Local player Ivan Goluza (NSW) looked to be in trouble early in his final round qualifying match against Dimitri Morogiannis (ACT). Goluza was down 4-2 in the tie-break before bouncing back and securing the first set 7-6(9). From that moment on Goluza stepped up the pressure and escaped through to qualify for the main draw, winning the second set 6-2.

"We both started really slow but I was serving pretty well. I served it out on set point. It got a tad windy in the second set and I broke him early which helped," Goluza said.

"I've played the last 5 weeks of tournaments and I'm a bit tired but I'm really happy to have qualified".

Main draw singles and doubles kick off tomorrow, with play starting at 10am. O’Shannessy is first up on court 1, followed by last year’s runner up Maverick Banes (QLD).
